Grading method Differentiated assessment (letters)
Curriculum subject
Curriculum 2018 CNS
Study year 3
Semester Fall semester
Subject type Optional
Higher Education Institution
Tallinn University of Technology
Goal of subject
• to introduce the mathematical theory of telecommunications, and basic types of communications channels
• to teach how to estimate the capacity of a channel
• to introduce demodulation and symbol detection techniques
• to introduce the sources of intersymbol interference and methods to reduce its effects in bandlimited channels
• to introduce time-frequency characteristics of radio channel and their effect on channel capacity
Learning outcomes of the subject
After having successfully passed the course a student:
• is able to calculate the logarithmic measure of information and data rate of a data source
• is able to estimate the channel capacity in presence of noise and distortions
• knows basic types of demodulators and symbol detectors and is capable of calculating symbol error probability
• is able to choose proper waveforms and implement diversity techniques for a communications channel under design to reduce the effects of intersymbol interference
