The overall purpose of the course is to equip the students with the technical foundations underlying the implementation of cognitive communication systems. The outset of the course is the software defined radio (SDR) platform with a special focus on the implementation of the digital baseband processing blocks. The course is conducted as a combination of lectures and laboratory assignements with the following aims:
• To give a general introduction to cognitive system concepts
• To introduce the SDR platform
• To present some of the most common digital baseband processing blocks of the SDR platform
• To present the architecture of various digital processing devices (GPP, DSP, FPGA, etc)
• To present the methods, techniques and tools for implementing the digital baseband processing blocks onto the above processing devices
• To apply the above for solving tasks and problems in order to gain practical experience.

After the course, the students should be able to demonstrate:
• Knowledge of cognitive system concepts
• Knowledge of the SDR platform
• Knowledge of the digital baseband processing blocks of the SDR platform
• Knowledge of and skills in designing and implementing the above blocks onto one or several processing devices (GPP, DSP, FPGA, etc)
• Competencies in SDR digital basedband implementation for cognitive systems, i.e., being able to autonomously apply the above knowledge and skills for solving real-life problems.

• HW synthesis
• Case studies (e.g. by means of scientic papers)
