Goal of subject

Introduction to basic communications techniques and systems; to their capacity and limitations; learning to estimate the required capacity and quality of service of a communications system using queuing theory and taking into account traffic load and available resources. An introduction to the theory of source and channel coding and the most important codes used in practice. Encoding and decoding algorithms are also considered. Both block codes and convolutional codes are studied.

Learning outcomes of the subject

After having successfully passed the course a student:
• knows basic telecommunications methods and their applications in telecommunication systems;
• is able to estimate throughput and quality of service of a communications system at a given capacity;
• is able to apply queuing theory to estimate the quality of service in communications networks;
• knows basic network dimensioning methods and is able to solve simpler dimensioning problems;
• is able to use the basic formula of coding theory;
• knows coding methods for different channels;
• is able to apply efficient coding algorithms for encoding and decoding tasks.
