Subject 'Telecommunications Theory'Name in Estonian: Sideteooria
Higher Education InstitutionTallinn University of Technology
Goal of subject• to introduce the mathematical theory of telecommunications, and basic types of communications channels
• to teach how to estimate the capacity of a channel • to introduce demodulation and symbol detection techniques • to introduce the sources of intersymbol interference and methods to reduce its effects in bandlimited channels • to introduce time-frequency characteristics of radio channel and their effect on channel capacity Learning outcomes of the subjectAfter having successfully passed the course a student:
• is able to calculate the logarithmic measure of information and data rate of a data source • is able to estimate the channel capacity in presence of noise and distortions • knows basic types of demodulators and symbol detectors and is capable of calculating symbol error probability • is able to choose proper waveforms and implement diversity techniques for a communications channel under design to reduce the effects of intersymbol interference Subject course descriptionBasic elements of a communications system. Mathematic theory of information transmission. Baseband signals. Passband signals and systems. Limited-bandwidth channel. Signaling over additive Gaussian noise channel. Optimum receiver. Probability of error for different digital modulation techniques. Soft- and hard-decision decoding. Carrier recovery and symbol synchronization. Intersymbol interference. Coherence time and bandwidth of a radio channel. Digital signaling over fading channels.
