Goal of subject

This course is providing solid foundation of GNSS (GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO) use for civil aviation from technical aspects and avionics to ATC procedures. Giving fundamentals of understanding GNSS and it’s specifics for meeting CA demands for its usage in aviation.
Demystifying GNSS augmentation systems like ABAS(RAIM), SBAS (WAAS, EGNOS) and GBAS and especially the way they provide integrity monitoring.
Giving full overview of contemporary RNAV architecture, approaches and CA requirements related to GNSS based navigation.

Learning outcomes of the subject

The student having passed the course:
Can understand foundation of GNSS for civil aviation applications accompanied by civil aviation requirement.
Has knowledge of architecture of the GNSS basic constellation and its operational principles and usage.
Has knowledge of GNSS augmentation systems in aviation, like ABAS(RAIM), SBAS (WAAS, EGNOS) and GBAS and especially the way they provide integrity monitoring.
Has knowledge of contemporary GNSS based RNAV system, procedures and approaches and nearfuture trends.

Subject course description

This e-learning course provides solid foundation of GNSS use for civil aviation. The course starts with the fundamentals of GNSS. It covers chaptered topics like GPS segments, signal from space structure, GPS operational principles, aviation receivers and there usage etc. Then course covers details on the source and nature of various positioning errors and impacts to positioning preciseness.
Course explains integrity requirements & monitoring for civil aviation applications particularly in RNAV systems. The course follows with GNSS augmentation systems and there use in civil aviation. Course gives an overview of civil aviation requirement. Different architectures to augment the basic constellations have been defined. Augmentation systems ABAS(RAIM), SBAS (WAAS, EGNOS) and GBAS and especially the way they provide integrity monitoring are described.
Course gives overview of procedures NPA, APV, CDA, GLS and Eurocontrol, SES GNSS development plans.
